Touchdown Wine!
To those of you who have read Fridays at Five with Lynne from the start: you’re fabulous and I love you. You also already know that beer is not the only beverage to enjoy while watching sports on TV. I stand firm by my belief that champagne pairs perfectly with any football-watching grub. But let’s talk about some other wines that will also work well at your Superbowl party this Sunday.
What wine to serve with Superbowl dishes and why:
Spicy chicken wings = Riesling.
This slightly sweet wine will enhance the flavor and take away some of the heat!
Hot dogs & hamburgers = Pinot Noir.
A nice light red Pinot Noir will complement the saltiness of the meat.
Nachos = Sauvignon Blanc.
The citrus will help break thru that thick and heavy cheese sauce!
Baby back ribs = Zinfandel.
The soft berry will go nicely with any sauce the ribs are cooked in.
Chili = Sangiovese.
It’s big enough to stand up to the ground meat and spices but soft enough to not overpower the tomatoes and beans.
Pizza = Syrah (Shiraz if it’s from Australia).
A syrah will go great with everything from sausages to sliced mushrooms.
Party-size sub = Prossecco.
This sparkling Italian wine will cut through the sharpness of the cold cuts and bring out the flavor of the cheese (even if it is American sliced cheese!)
If your Superbowl party is very posh:
Oysters, clams or smoked salmon. = Pino Grigio.
The acidity of a Pinot Grigio will help break through the saltiness.
Pot stickers or chicken skewers. = Chardonnay.
These flavors go nicely with a dry wine because they’re very aromatic and slightly spicy, and Chardonnay will enhances without overpowering.
So uncork those wine bottles and let’s have a Superbowl party. Who’s inviting me to their house? I’ll bring the wine!
Cheers!
