Pass the Leftovers
It’s the day after Thanksgiving; and I’m sitting on the beach in elastic waist sweat pants recovering from all the good food and wine I managed to consume yesterday. I’ll bet I’m not the only one feeling this way, am I?
Now what will we do with ourselves? Today will be filled with leftovers, shopping, and watching football – all excellent wine-drinking opportunities. Read on for some ideas about what to pair with these traditional events.
First, you’ll need fuel for shopping. Champagne would go well with a nice turkey scramble. Look in the fridge, there should be some kind of vegetable from yesterday to throw in with the eggs. Then grab a nice bottle of champagne like Roederer Estate from Anderson Valley to go with it. Drink freely. Now you’re ready to hit the biggest shopping day of the year. Good luck!
After shopping comes lunch and you’ll be dying of thirst as you prepare your turkey sandwich. I suggest a cold, crisp sauvignon blanc or pinot gris with your sandwich. I like King Estate Pinot Gris from Oregon or Groth Savignon Blanc from Mendocino County, CA.
Later comes football on tv . That makes me think of a bottle of Syrah with some turkey chili. (Good thing you stocked up on several different types of wine - you’re so smart!) My pick is Melville Syrah from Santa Rita Hills, CA.
Oh no - Aunt Edna just pulled out an apple pie that no one ate last night. What will you drink with this? How about a nice cold ice wine (wine that has been made from grapes harvested after the winter frost). Ice wines have a very concentrated flavor and are very sweet. They pair great with fruit desserts. My favorite ice wine is made from Inniskillin in Canada.
Yes-that sounds perfect! I’m full just thinking about it!
Happy Holidays and Cheers!
